University "Dunărea de Jos" of Galaţi assumes the task of preparing specialists in various socio-economic areas, participating actively in supporting and transmitting science and culture, helping to improve local and national patrimony of knowledge through scientific research.

University assumes the role of cultural and civic center, training and disseminating of cultural, scientific and social operating, both in the area and around the country.

As the largest and most important institution of higher education in South - East of Romania (about 18,000 students, 15 faculties), University "Dunărea de Jos" of Galaţi is a spearhead of technical, scientific, social and cultural progress with immediate applicability on medium and long term, primarily designed to contribute to the progress of the Galati city.

In this sense, the University collaborates closely with the socio - economic environment, giving experts, consulting and technical solutions to current problems.

Inside University activates also the European Centre of Excellence in Environmental which was founded in 1999 as Inter-Environment Department financially supported by the Dutch government (The Matra Programme RO/97/04). In 2001, following a rigorous competition organized by the European Union (the PHARE programme RO 9706.01.02) Inter Environment Department of the University "Dunarea de Jos" was classified as "European Center of Excellence for the Environment" (ECEE), the only of its kind in the country.
